Social Media Adolescent Addiction Canadian Class Action

Investigation

CONSUMER LAW GROUP is investigating a Canada-wide class action lawsuit against Meta, Snap, ByteDance, and Google designing, developing, marketing, and making available social media platforms that deliberately target and exploit adolescent engagement to maximize profits. The listed social media platforms have deliberately continued to conceal the addictive nature of their platforms, as well as the clearly documented associated harms to adolescents’ mental health and development, social relations and a significant increase in the rate of adolescent suicide.

The deliberate targeting of youth by the listed social media platforms is responsible for a widespread youth mental health crisis. The platforms design collaborate with mental health professionals to maximize the addictive nature of their apps and increase the frequent, excessive, and compulsive use of these apps by adolescents. The US Surgeon General has highlighted that children are uniquely vulnerable to exploitation by social media platforms and hundreds of lawsuits have been filed in US courts concerning the harmful, unhealthy, and compulsive use of social media apps by adolescents.

The proposed class action defendants own internal research reveals their awareness of the dangerous, compulsive and addictive nature of their social media products and their significant negative consequences on children and youth. The platforms have however continued to develop, market, and enhance the predatory and addictive nature of their apps to maximize their profits. The platforms are also undeniably aware that their apps contribute and facilitate the sextortion and sexual exploitation of adolescents, and the ongoing production and dissemination of child pornography and sex abuse material on the Internet.

Consumer Law Group believes action must be taken for the millions of adolescents afflicted with unhealthy social media addictions and who the proposed class action defendants have and continue to intentionally target with predatory schemes and algorithms they know are responsible for causing a mental health epidemic among adolescent users.

Consumer Law Group seeks compensatory damages for the psychological, physical and financial harm incurred by persons who use or otherwise access the social media apps the proposed defendants have designed and developed (Snap, Bytedance, Facebook, YouTube), as well as punitive damages and all other relief that consumers are entitled to under the law.

If you or someone you know has used or otherwise accessed Snap, Bytedance, Facebook or YouTube in a compulsive or excessive way and you wish to obtain more information on potential compensation, or to be kept advised of the status of the Social Media Harms Class Action litigation or any resulting compensation resulting from the Class Action Lawsuit in Canada or Quebec, please provide your contact information to our law firm using the below form.
